Finnish by origin. International by practice.
Juho Viitasalo is an industrial designer and branding professional with an international career spanning Europe and Japan. The work is grounded in a belief that good design solves problems quietly — without announcing itself.
Over the years the work has included industrial product design, corporate brand identity, pattern development and design consulting for companies across several industries. A series of original patterns has been in commercial production with a Kyoto-based textile maker for over a decade.
The Finnish-Japanese thread in the work is not accidental. Finnish design culture — rigorous, unsentimental, close to material — finds an unexpected resonance with Japanese craft sensibility. Both traditions value restraint. Both distrust decoration for its own sake.
That dialogue has shaped the patterns, the approach to brand identity, and the way problems get framed before solutions are attempted.
Design Viitasalo Oy is a Finnish company, established in 1987 to bring this work to clients and collaborators in Europe, Japan and beyond. History spans architecture, jewelry design, art, industrial design, brand identity and patterns.
An independent laboratory for experiments, open source tools and parametric design research is maintained at dvoy.net.
The sensibility behind the work has roots. A father who was an architect. A mother who was an artist and designer — her work included a series of angel pendant designs in precious metal, some of which remain in production today. Their influence is present in everything, even when it is not visible.
